One, Two and Three Year-Old Trees

We have established a naming system based on the approximate age of trees in each category. Citrus trees may grow at varying rates depending on variety, type and season. Typically, the “three year-old” trees are ready to set fruit in the following season, while the “two year-old” and “one year-old” trees need a few more seasons of growth before they are productive.

One Year-Old Trees

“One year-old” trees generally are 12"-16" tall with a trunk diameter of about 1/4". They are growing in a 4 x 10" (or in a few cases a 4” x 6”) container of soil. Within a month of delivery, it is best to repot into a larger container (~8-10" diameter) to give the roots more room to grow.

Two Year-Old Trees

The two year-old trees will be available for sale in FALL 2013.  They are approximately 20-24" tall with a trunk diameter of about 3/8". They are growing in a 5 x 12" container of soil. Repot into a 10-12" diameter pot within a few months of delivery, or when roots begin to show through drainage holes.

Three Year-Old Trees

The “three year-old” trees have more extensive branching, about ½” trunk diameter and a larger root system than the other two sizes. They have been grown in a 3.4 gallon nursery pot. When prepared for shipping, soil is removed from the tree’s roots and they are carefully packed with moist wood shavings in a plastic bag. Bare-rooted citrus trees should be planted in a 12-14” container upon arrival. They can also be planted directly in the ground in suitable climates. Since this size tree ships without soil, it is OK for shipping to Hawai’i.

Each citrus producing state, including California, prohibits importation of citrus trees from other citrus growing areas, therefore we cannot ship citrus trees to Texas, Arizona or Florida. We CAN ship non-tree items to these states. We also do not ship any items to the US Virgin Islands, Guam, Puerto Rico or to API/APO addresses, or to other countries at this time.

Due to agricultural restrictions, we cannot send fruit, foliage or plants in soil to Hawaii. We can ship all other non-tree items to Hawaii. Please select the bare-rooted, three year-old trees for shipping to Hawaii.
