3 Signs Your Citrus Tree Is Waking Up for Spring

Spring is citrus season’s big wake-up call for citrus trees. After a long, cold winter, they are gearing up for its most exciting time of year. There are three tell-tale signs that your citrus tree is waking up for spring and ready to get growing. If you’re new to citrus growing, you might be wondering: What should I be looking for?

Here are the top three changes you’ll start to notice on healthy citrus trees in spring, and what each one means for the season ahead.

1. Fresh Flush: New Leaves Emerge

One of the first changes to look for in spring is a fresh flush of new growth. These tender, baby leaves will often be lighter green or sometimes purple before they darken and mature. This flush of new foliage is a sure sign your citrus tree is actively growing again.

Why it matters:
This new growth is essential. Your tree needs those young leaves to photosynthesize, support fruit development, and build its energy reserves. It's also a good time to give your tree a nutritional boost. We like to feed our citrus trees with either Romeo Plant Food for a slow, consistent release, or G&B Organics Fruit and Citrus Tree Fertilizer for a more organic approach to growth support.

Tip: If your tree isn’t flushing by mid-spring and the temperatures are warm, it may be struggling. Check for signs of stress such as dry soil, rootbound pots, or pests, and be sure it’s getting enough water and nutrients.

2. Flowers and Baby Fruit (a.k.a. Nature’s Little Miracles)

The next stage that shows your citrus tree is waking up for spring is arguably the most magical- flowering. Depending on the variety, you may see delicate, white, fragrant blossoms start to open up as early as March and continuing through May or June. These citrus blooms are sweet, citrusy, and usually draw a crowd (more on that in a minute).

Soon after the blooms fade, you’ll notice tiny green fruits starting to form at the base of the spent flowers. These little guys are baby citrus fruits, and while not all of them will stick around (most will fall off), the ones that do will slowly grow over the next few months into the lemons, limes, oranges, or mandarins you’ve been dreaming of.

Why it matters:
This bloom-to-fruit transition is a crucial time. Your tree is expending a ton of energy, and it’s a good moment to check that it has enough support. A top-up of fertilizer and regular watering will help your citrus hold onto more of its fruit.

Tip: If your tree is blooming but not setting fruit, it might need help from a third party- enter the pollinators.

3. Pollinator Party: BYOBees

One of the most exciting signs of spring is seeing your citrus tree become a hot spot for bees, hoverflies, and other pollinators. Citrus trees are naturally attractive to pollinators because of their strong floral scent and nectar-rich blossoms.

Why it matters:
Pollinators play a big role in fruit set, especially if you're growing certain varieties like oranges, lemons, or tangerines. While citrus trees are self-pollinating, the presence of pollinators usually boosts the fruit yield and quality.

Tip: Planting pollinator-friendly flowers like lavender, alyssum, or basil nearby can help create a more inviting environment for bees and butterflies. And if you're using any pest control products, make sure they’re pollinator-safe.
