Our best selling citrus trees of the first week of January took me by surprise! Coming in at #1 is Shiranui Mandarin trees followed by Yuzu and Kishu Mandarins. This is a big change from our usual Top 3 citrus trees: Meyer Lemon, Bearss Lime, and Owari Satsuma Mandarins or Calamondin.
Top Sellers in the first week of January: Shiranui Mandarins, Yuzu and Kishu Mandarins (top to bottom)
Shiranui and Kishu are seedless, while Yuzu has lots of seeds.Today, I picked the first ripe Shiranui mandarin from our citrus tree test garden and tasted its fruit for the first time. It did not disappoint! It reminds me of an easy-to-peel orange, very sweet and juicy with no seeds! I was very impressed with how easy to eat it was. Shiranui is also called Dekopon and can be referred to by the brand name “Sumo Citrus”.

Our Yuzu are starting to change color from green to yellow. You can use them when they are green or yellow, but the longer you wait, the more dried out they become inside.

It is the end of Kishu mandarin season and we still have a lot left, and I am trying to savor them because this tree is typically alternate bearing, so we don’t see them again for a while. They are very easy to peel and eat and perfect to pack into lunchboxes!
