Excessive Bloom Setting

Q: My tree produced a lot of blossoms and then many of the leaves fell off. What is going on?

A: Sometimes a large fruit crop and dropping leaves can be a signal that the tree is "in trouble" and thus putting all its energy into fruit production. Usually the problem can be found below the soil surface. Root rot can be caused by fungi attacking the roots when the soil is too wet, too dry, too hot, too cold, or too heavily fertilized. Could the tree be wetter or drier than in previous years? Do you have a new irrigation system, excavation, any other changes in the root zone? Did you switch to a different fertilizer regime? Is the sunlight or supplemental light for the tree still adequate?
